How to Declutter Your Home for Good and Boost Your Mental Health

A cluttered home can go beyond quirky and messy. When it gets to this point, it might be time to make some changes. Unfortunately, when a home becomes cluttered, it can increase stress and negatively impact your mental wellbeing. This is because a messy home gets stressful, it is harder to navigate, cannot be kept very clean and just makes it hard to relax and enjoy the space. You then can’t make it your own

If you are starting to feel this way about your home, it is time to declutter. This can feel like a bit of a chore at first, but once you get going, it will be satisfying. When you can make the time to declutter your home, you will find a new sense of calm and control, you will be able to relax more in your own home and you will find that your stress decreases. Your overall mood and mental well-being will be uplifted for good. Then your home becomes much easier to clean and maintain, giving you both short-term and long-term benefits.

If you want to declutter your home for good but you don’t know where to start, here are some top tips that will change your life.

#1 Start small

It is easy to want to overhaul everything all at once, but that is where issues start to come in. It can then become too big of a task and one that is very overwhelming to start. Instead, break down the process into smaller, more manageable steps. This makes the task more realistic and easier to start and get going. Instead of trying to do your whole house all in one go, you should start with a small area or room at a time. For example, you may pick your bedroom, and start with your drawers, then the next task is under your bed, then the next is your wardrobe, and so on. You can make a list to help you organize your thoughts and make a plan of action to follow through on.

#2 Make an assessment

As you go through all of your belongings, don’t just move them around. This is a huge mistake people tend to make and then they don’t achieve the declutter they wanted. Be honest with yourself and consider whether it is an item you want to keep or not. Does it bring you joy? Does it give you value? Does it have sentimental value? Is it something you might want your children to have?

Then you can consider whether you want to keep it, store it, sell it, or donate it.

You don’t have to get rid of everything, there might be plenty of items you want to keep, but not store them in your home. If that is the case, you can opt for a local storage facility.

#3 Maintain your space

The next important part of the process is learning how to maintain your new clear space. To do this, you may set yourself some new boundaries when it comes to acquiring items, and ask yourself some assessment questions as to whether it is something you truly want in your home.

Decluttering can be hard, but you won’t regret it when you start!
